If lacing up your shoes is how you get your kicks, then Portland’s sixth annual Sneaker Week (Thurs., Aug. 4-Wed., Aug. 10) is the place to be. Undoubtedly, the footwear festival fits the city well, considering the industry giants that call it home.
For co-founders Herbert Beauclere and Megan Davis, it goes many steps beyond what you put on your feet — it’s about the why, the how, and each person’s story. This year’s theme is “neXposure,” a push to elevate future designers, entrepreneurs, and influencers by connecting them with working professionals. At its sole, it’s a celebration of the sneakerhead community and culture.

The Oregon Health Authority is investigating 15 possible cases of hyperthermia-related deaths from last week’s heat wave, seven of which occurred in Multnomah County. Final determination on the cause of death may not be known for several months, according to officials. (The Oregonian/Oregon Live)

Plan Ahead -
What do classical music and wine have in common? They both get better with time. Thankfully, you don’t have to wait much longer to enjoy both at the Willamette Valley Chamber Music Festival, which runs Fri., Aug. 6-Sun., Aug. 21 at Sokol Blosser Winery, Archery Summit, and J. Christopher Wines. 🍇
Closing -
After 16 years, Floating World Comics’ last day in Old Town will be Mon., Aug. 8 — but fret not, fans of the 2D sequential art form. The Lloyd Center is saving the day, as owner Jason Leivian is simply moving his shop to the mall’s growing art hub. (Portland Mercury)
Drink -
Get an early taste of the cocktail bar Fools and Horses, which will bring sophisticated sips and Hawaiian fare to 226 NW 12th Ave. in late August. Specifically, the cuisine draws inspiration from Paniolo culture, blending native foods + traditions from the islands with North American culinary influences. 🍍 (Eater Portland)
Community -
Construction is progressing on The Vine: Mill Plain Boulevard, C-Tran’s second bus rapid transit line in Vancouver, which is scheduled for full operation in the fall of 2023. All told, 37 stops with raised platforms and ticket vending machines will be added, along with eight new 60-ft buses + a new transit center. 🚌 (The Columbian)
Listen -
Portland-based television writer Bill Oakley’s new five-hour, comedic sci-fi radio play, “Space: 1969,” imagines a world where JFK was never assassinated. The alternate history saga draws on the vocal talent of actress Natasha Lyonne to narrate the night nurse protagonist’s adventures on the moon. 🚀 (Portland Monthly)
Watch -
Free Blockbuster, a community lending dispenser that trades in VHS cassettes and DVDs — much like its nearly defunct namesake — is bringing the joy of nostalgia to residents of Oregon City (19350 Hazel Grove Dr.). It’s currently one of seven in the state. 📼 (Portland Tribune)
Pets -
If you have a pet bunny that’s acting strange — no, not like in “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” — Multnomah County is spreading awareness of a highly contagious virus that was recently transmitted from wild rabbits to domesticated ones. The local property is now under quarantine, but there is no threat to humans. 🐇 (KOIN)

The US Forest Service is asking for input regarding proposed fee hikes at 26 sites in the Mount Hood National Forest. The increased revenue will go toward services like restroom cleaning and trash collection, plus additional projects like a brand new rental yurt at Trillium Lake and more accessible amenities.
Share your thoughts by email, comment cards at USFS offices, mail, or during a virtual public meeting slated for sometime in early September. |

Editor’s pick: To celebrate my birthday, my wife and I took a road trip to the southern Oregon Coast. We stayed at Bay Point Landing, a modern camping destination with cabins, RV hookups, and Airstream trailers, which is also located near Cape Arago + Shore Acres State Park. Getting to see Bandon’s Circles in the Sand (and escaping the heat) made it a truly memorable weekend.
